The Importance of Estrogen for the Female Brain

1 min read

Women! Our brains have a ton of estrogen receptors in them. I wanted to show you how significant it is to replace estrogen during perimenopause. Yes, I said PERImenopause. When levels start to decline, THAT IS THE TIME TO REPLACE. No more waiting until your cycles stop or your levels become undetectable.

This diagram shows you all the areas of the female brain that require estrogen to function properly. This is why everything—literally everything—goes awry in menopause.

A few more facts of significance:

  • Before menopause, men and women have equal risk of dementia.

  • After menopause, a woman's risk almost doubles, while a man's stays the same.

  • Women comprise 2/3 of all Alzheimer's patients.

If you can sense that you are not feeling like yourself, please come see me. Even if you have been on estrogen before "for a while" and then a provider told you that you "didn't need it anymore." The science tells a different story.
